OpenArena-VR
The free arena shooter OpenArena in VR, standalone on Meta Quest and PICO.
About
A standalone 6DoF VR port of OpenArena 0.8.8 for Meta Quest 2 / Pro / 3 / 3S (tested on Quest 3) and PICO 4 / Neo 3. It is built on Team Beef's ioq3quest (Quake3Quest), merged with OpenArena's own open-source game code.
OpenArena is a free, open-source arena shooter in the style of Quake III Arena, with its own maps, characters and weapons. The whole game is inside the APK: no PC, no extra download and no files to copy.
Play offline against bots, or online on the real OpenArena servers, including pure servers and mod servers.
PICO support is brand new and not tested on PICO hardware yet: reports are very welcome. One APK covers both makes.
Features
- The full OpenArena 0.8.8: all maps, characters, weapons and game modes
- Aiming with the right controller, weapon wheel, snap turning and comfort options
- 3D crosshair coloured by your health
- Single player and skirmish matches against bots
- Online play on the official OpenArena server list, with automatic download of missing maps and mod files (ratmod, Clan Arena, freeze tag, defrag, ...)
- Virtual keyboard for your player name and other text fields
- Runs on PICO 4 / Neo 3 too, from the same APK (untested)
Manual
Installation
- Sideload the APK with SideQuest or
adb install -r OpenArena-VR-v1.1.0.apk. SideQuest is a Quest tool, so on PICO use adb or whichever sideloader you already use. - Launch OpenArena-VR from Unknown Sources and allow file access.
- The first start unpacks the game data to
/sdcard/OpenArenaVR/(about a minute), then the main menu opens.
Good to know
- Online: Multiplayer, set the source to Internet and press Refresh. Servers running a mod download its files before you join (ratmod is about 100 MB); the screen shows "0 of 0 bytes" for a few seconds before the progress appears. Downloaded files are kept, so the next join is fast.
- Mod servers run with the built-in VR game code: the mod's maps, textures and sounds work, special mod rules or HUD features may not. Plain OpenArena servers are the most reliable.
- Some servers turn away players with a high ping, e.g. US servers when you play from Europe.
- The APK is signed with a debug key.
- PICO needs PICO OS 5.9.0 or newer. The PICO build is untested: if it does not start, or the controllers do nothing, please open an issue on GitHub.
adb logcat -s Quake3:*shows how far it gets.
Controller mapping
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Right trigger | Fire |
| Right grip (hold) | Weapon wheel: point at a weapon, release |
| Right stick left / right | Snap-turn |

| X | Use item |
| Y | Gesture |
| Left stick | Move |
| Left stick click | Scoreboard |

Button names are those of the Meta Quest controllers; PICO controllers use the same layout. Other layouts (weapon wheel on the stick, next / previous weapon) and the comfort settings are in the VR options of the menu.
Download
Install from your browser
One click over USB, for Meta Quest and PICO: no SideQuest needed. Works in Chrome or Edge on a PC, Mac or Android phone.
The installer needs JavaScript. Use the manual download below.
First time? Before you start
- Turn on developer mode. Quest: Meta Horizon app on your phone → Devices → your headset → Headset settings → Developer mode. PICO: Settings → General → About → tap Software version 7 times, then Settings → Developer → turn on USB debugging.
- Connect the headset to this computer with a USB cable that carries data (not a charge-only cable).
- Close SideQuest and Meta Quest Developer Hub. If you use adb, run
adb kill-serverfirst: only one program can talk to the headset at a time. - Windows: if the headset doesn't show up in the list, install the Meta Quest ADB driver.
- After pressing Connect, put on the headset and allow USB debugging for this computer.
